Reddit is a social media platform, one of several that we provide content creation and management for, as part of our blockchain marketing service package that we offer to clients. It still has a good virality factor (due to the emphasis on “hot” topics being promoted) so can be a very good source of traffic or awareness.

Many of our potential customers do come to us looking to do this particular service, while others do ask us if it’s important for their brand, so it’s definitely still very much in demand in terms of presence and activity among the crypto and blockchain community.

The question then that comes after that is: where should we focus our activities in and which audience should we interact with on Reddit?

For us, we believe that it’s very important first to identify who your audience is and which type of people are likely to want to use your product or service. In fact, identifying your User Persona (the type of person that will find your product attractive and for whom your brand will then focus its marketing activities on) is a really important part of a Marketing Strategy, and it’s something we’re ready to help blockchain projects do.

But if you haven’t figured that out yet, or aren’t ready to get into that depth of analysis, we thought we’d help you with a general bird’s eye view of which crypto subreddits (that’s threads or sub-sections within Reddit) are the best for you.

  1. r/Bitcoin

You can’t talk about crypto Reddit without talking about r/Bitcoin, which is, by far, the largest and most active of all the crypto subreddits today, with over 1.7 million subscribers and counting. Some 5 thousand redditors are active at any given time, ensuring you get maximum eyes on your content here at all times. On the other hand, the volume of content does mean your chances of getting seen are low.

r/Bitcoin, as the name suggests, is almost chiefly discussions related to Bitcoin and is owned and managed by the same person who operated the Bitcointalk forum and bitcoin.org. For the uninitiated, this means that the rules here are as strict as they come: posts must be related to Bitcoin, they should be serious and constructive, and the moderators do not take too kindly to content that could detract from Bitcoin.

So if your project isn’t related to Bitcoin, you might not be able to get posts approved easily here. However, a good post about Bitcoin, or even a well-crafted original meme, can get you quite a bit of love.

  1. r/btc

The description for r/btc says “/r/btc was created to foster and support free and open Bitcoin discussion about cryptocurrency, Bitcoin news, and exclusive AMA (Ask Me Anything) interviews from top Bitcoin and cryptocurrency leaders.” and it alludes to how some members of the Bitcoin community felt about what they thought was a draconian way of running r/Bitcoin — which censored or deleted topics they felt were harmful to the original Bitcoin code. In other words, altcoins or fork of Bitcoins, or thoughts that diverged from that of Bitcoin core developers.

It’s a little-known secret that r/btc was dominated thus by Bitcoin Cash supporters in the early days, but these days, consider this subreddit to be an alternative Bitcoin discussion with members also more open to ideas of alternative crypto.

  1. r/CryptoMarkets

If you’re into trading crypto (and who isn’t, really?) then you’ll want to look into this subreddit which has just shy of a quarter million users. As the name suggests, this is where traders and speculators come together, sharing technical analyses on the markets, or news related to markets, or services and products that are aimed at traders.

It can be a very busy place, especially during times of volatility (which isn’t uncommon for crypto), so you can be assured of plenty of readers waiting to see the next bullish chart or moon sentiment here.

  1. r/EthTrader

You would have heard of Decentralized Finance (Defi) if you’ve been active in the crypto space by now, and Defi traders will have Ethereum to thank for that, with most Dapps and Defi apps built on top of the Ethereum public blockchain. With over 220,000 users, this is the place you want to be for trading the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, and with ETH 2.0 looming in 2021, you won’t want to miss out on Hot posts in this subreddit!

  1. r/CryptoCurrency

Always playing catch up to r/Bitcoin is r/CryptoCurrency, which currently has over 1.1 million users. The large user base can appear to be attractive to those hoping to get more coverage from their topics, but the moderation here can be quite loose, and is just that bit more vulnerable to “shilling” where just about anyone can talk about anything — including pointless crypto projects. There’s nothing specific here, but it’s a useful catch-all net for all things crypto.

  1. r/Ethereum

Coming up to nearly half a million users, this subreddit is strictly for general news, development and adoption of the world’s biggest Dapp and smart contract platform. Particularly useful for developers of commercial B2C products and apps, this place lets you get an idea of trends and thoughts from actual users. There’s no room for trading and speculation posts here, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing!

7. r/BitcoinBeginners

Especially useful for brands looking at attracting newbie users of non-crypto people curious about crypto is r/BitcoinBeginners. It’s a decently-sized thread and has people coming in here to ask about how to use Bitcoin, new services or products. Answering newbies can be a good way to draw attention to your product, while also contributing to the general Reddit discussion.

And there you have it! Seven subreddits for you to look at in 2020 and beyond. Of course, there are plenty of others out there, but you can’t go wrong starting out here.
